I directed “Unapologetically Black” as a celebration of Black identity, individuality, and cultural expression, drawing heavily from the style and energy of the 90s. For the wardrobe, I pulled from recognizable elements of the era including oversized denim, overalls, sports jerseys, varsity jackets, crop tops, bandanas, layered jewelry, tinted sunglasses, and relaxed silhouettes. I wanted each model to have a distinct personality while still feeling connected as a group, reflecting the range of personal style that has always existed within Black culture.

I extended that direction into the set design by creating a wall filled with photographs and references to defining moments, figures, and imagery from Black pop culture. Rather than using a traditional backdrop, I wanted the models to exist within a space physically surrounded by the culture that inspired the shoot. The collage became part of the storytelling, connecting the fashion of the present to the music, entertainment, style, and cultural icons that came before it.

I also directed the posing and group compositions to feel confident, relaxed, and full of personality, allowing each model to take up space without losing the sense of community between them. Every detail was designed to make the shoot feel celebratory rather than centered on struggle. “Unapologetically Black” is ultimately about existing fully as ourselves, surrounded by our history, our influence, our creativity, and our culture without needing to explain or minimize any part of it.
